"People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it." – Simon Sinek
Think back to the moment you first started your business. Do you remember that spark of excitement and passion? You had a vision—maybe to have more control over your life, to do things your own way, or to make a real difference through your expertise.
But over time, it’s easy to lose sight of that original purpose. The daily pressures—clients, teams, deadlines, finances—can pull you further and further away from why you started in the first place. When that happens, motivation dips, and the work begins to feel draining rather than fulfilling.
This week, I want you to reconnect with your purpose. Because your "why" isn’t just about the business you started—it’s about the belief that drives you. It’s the reason you do what you do. The thing that gets you out of bed in the morning, especially on the tough days.
As Simon Sinek explains in Start With Why, the most successful businesses and leaders don’t begin with what they do—they begin with why. When your purpose is clear, everything else starts to fall into place. But when it’s unclear or forgotten, it becomes harder to lead, harder to grow, and harder to stay motivated.
Your Why Goes Deeper Than Your Business
Your why isn’t a marketing slogan or something you pin on the office wall. It’s personal. It’s about who you are and what you believe in. It shapes how you lead, how you serve, and how you make decisions. When it’s front and centre, your business feels purposeful and energised. When it’s missing, it all starts to feel heavy.
In Start With Why, Sinek explains that most people lead and communicate from the outside in. They start with what they do, then how they do it—and only sometimes, if at all, get to why they do it.
But real clarity, leadership, and loyalty come from the inside out. When your “why” is clear, you lead with conviction. You make better decisions. You attract the right people. And you stay focused, even when things get tough.
Your “why” is the belief that drives everything. And when you lose sight of it, business starts to feel like a burden instead of a choice.
My Story: From Breakdown to Breakthrough
When I ran my law firm, I often felt I was constantly fighting fires. The daily demands made it hard to step back and remember why I’d started the firm in the first place.
I hadn't started my business simply for money or success—I wanted freedom, control, and the ability to make a tangible difference. I loved helping clients overcome real problems, giving them clarity, and empowering them to move forward confidently.
Yet somewhere along the way, I lost sight of this. I reached breaking point.
A challenge with the regulatory body forced me to stop. While I could have continued with the law firm, I made the decision not to. That experience made me pause, reflect, and ask myself whether the business I had built truly aligned with my purpose.
It didn’t.
So I made a conscious decision to rebuild—not just a new business, but myself. I began again with a clear sense of purpose and a business that fulfilled my true calling.
Looking back now, I can see that every part of that journey was necessary. Without the lessons, the pain, and the pressure of that time, I wouldn’t be doing what I do today. It shaped me. It gave me clarity. And it rooted me firmly in my why.
I realised I’d built a business that didn’t give me the one thing I truly wanted: freedom. Freedom to choose how I spent my time. Freedom to work in a way that aligned with my values. Freedom to live life on my own terms.
Today, my purpose is clearer than ever: I help business owners build profitable, purposeful businesses that not only work for them—not the other way around—but also create the freedom to live life on their own terms, whatever that freedom means to them.
Why This Resonates With the Clients I Serve
When I work with business owners—particularly in service-based businesses—my “why” tends to strike a chord.
Not because everyone wants exactly what I want. But because almost everyone I work with is searching for their own version of freedom. And they’ve realised their business isn’t giving it to them.
For some, it’s financial freedom—not having to worry whether there’s enough left at the end of the month.
For others, it’s time freedom—being able to step away from the business without everything collapsing.
For many, it’s the freedom to travel, explore, and live life beyond the office.
And for most, it’s simply the freedom to live life on their own terms—whatever that looks like for them.
Whatever freedom means to you, your business should be helping you achieve it. If it’s not, then you’ve likely drifted from your purpose.
And that’s the moment to stop, step back, and reconnect with your why.
Your Why Drives Everything
So how do you reconnect with your purpose when things feel off track?
It doesn’t require a dramatic reset. But it does require space to reflect and the willingness to be honest with yourself.
Here are three powerful questions inspired by Start With Why that I come back to often:
• Why do I do what I do? What belief or value sits at the heart of your work?
• How do I bring that belief to life in my business? Is it showing up in your culture, your client experience, your decisions?
• What am I doing today that’s aligned—or misaligned—with that belief? Where’s the disconnect? What’s pulling you off course?
These questions aren’t tick-box exercises. They need space, time, and real honesty. But they’re worth it. Because when your purpose is clear again, your energy shifts. You make decisions faster. You stop second-guessing. You lead with confidence and clarity.
And most importantly—you start building a business that reflects who you are, not just what you do.
Final Thoughts
You didn’t go into business just to survive.
You did it because you believed in something—something better than what you had. Whether that belief was about freedom, purpose, impact, or independence, it still matters. It’s still there.
And if you’ve lost touch with it, you’re not broken. You’re just disconnected. That’s fixable.
So take the time this week to reconnect with your why. Remind yourself what you believe in. Rebuild that emotional connection with your business.
Because when you lead from purpose, you lead with power.
And if you're ready to get back on track, I’d love to help.
